Description
Ella is a middle-aged woman living in Massachusetts who works as a literary agent. She feels unfulfilled in her marriage and her work, until she is given a manuscript to read by a man named Aziz Zahara. The manuscript is about Rumi and Shams and their transformative relationship, and as Ella reads it, she becomes engrossed in the story and begins to see her own life in a new light.
As the novel alternates between Ella’s modern-day struggles and the historical love story of Rumi and Shams, the author draws parallels between the two narratives, highlighting the enduring power of love and the human search for meaning and connection.
Throughout the book, Shafak explores themes of spirituality, mysticism, and the search for enlightenment. She also delves into the complexities of human relationships, including the challenges of marriage and the search for one’s soulmate.
