Originally created between 1862 and 1864 by Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) for 10-year-old Alice Liddell, the daughter of his Oxford dean, the manuscript Alice’s Adventures Under Ground became Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 with Tenniel’s illustrations. The book, playful, satirical, and both gentle and wild, quickly became beloved by readers of all ages, leading to the sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871) and the famous poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876).

Charles Dodgson, a reserved mathematics professor, achieved international fame under his pen name, Lewis Carroll. The books have never gone out of print and have inspired countless adaptations, from books and artwork to plays, games, and movies.
